I seem to have misplaced my left eye.

Recently I ran my first ever half marathon. This is ridiculous not only because a) I look like Phoebe from Friends when I run and b) no matter what I do, my leggings always fall down a bit (no, Mr Short Shorts from the park, I am not bum flirting with you); but mostly because it turns out that 13.1 miles is actually a really, really freaking long way.

I’ve never been fashionable. I mean, I like clothes, but I’ve never quite got there with the whole ‘bang on trend’ thing. Not through a lack of trying – just because the universe is utterly against it happening.

I rock a pair of Nike Air Max, people tell me it’s good I’m going to the gym. I wear a quilted skirt, people ask why I’m wearing half a sleeping bag. I buy a vintage jacket and people sing ‘Climb Every Mountain’ because apparently I look like I’m wearing the Sound of Music curtain outfit (the most offensive thing there being the weak song choice, of course).

So when I read that fluffy coats are IN this winter, you can only imagine how excited I was… because I ALREADY OWN A FLUFFY COAT.

I am fashion!!!

Good face

There weren’t supposed to be any adventures.

At least, that was what Matt and I told ourselves afterwards. Our holiday to Thailand and Cambodia was meant to be about relaxing, getting a tan (and possibly nose peel) and drinking ALL OF THE CHANG.

And that was it.

Because Asia adventures are for people who want to go see the world, like my sister and her boyfriend (see her brilliant and bonkers blog for more details more on that).

They’re for students who want to drink snake’s blood and talk loudly about how lame all other backpackers are but how GREAT jazz music is.

They’re for people who are having a mid-life crisis and want to learn about the world, learn about themselves… or, you know, just make out like teenagers underwater to an All Saints soundtrack.

They’re not for people who go away for three weeks.

Or so we thought.

2My New Year’s Eve was a disaster. A total and utter disaster.

I chose to spend it in a little pub in the middle of nowhere, so far from civilisation that my only way home was a lift at ten past midnight. It was a rowdy place and my evening mainly consisted of loud squawking bagpipes and old men in embellished waistcoats trying to grind against me on the dancefloor.

Yep. So far, it was shaping up to be one of the best nights of my life.

Hey, you there! Are you HUNGARY for an adventure? ‘Cos you’re nothing Budapest! etc etc.

Okay, let’s face it; when it comes to Budapest, the pun opportunities are pretty endless. But surprisingly, that’s not the only reason I went there (we’re talking, maybe, 23% of the decision?).

Yep, me and my pal, Tom, spent four days there in December 2013 and, through making mistakes such as not understanding which way North is on an INTERACTIVE MAP THAT TELLS YOU WHICH WAY NORTH IS, we now know what to do (and what not to) in Budapest…

mams

This year, instead of having/eating an advent calendar, me and my sister MADE our own… out of videos!

Sure, each video took about 10 minutes to film and four hours to upload, and sure, each video got an average of about 2 views (thanks, Mum/Dad)… but it was all worth it in the end.

I mean, who knew you could make content out of a trip to Home Bargains, or a game out of a cup of water? Exactly. Lives have been changed.

If you can’t quite muster the energy to watch all 20 videos (we were aiming for 25… but, y’know, we didn’t account for the Christmas hangovers), then here are some of my favourite ones.*

1. Mum’s Christmas Surprise!

Mum took us on a surprise trip to Osbourne House! And then Osborne House FOUND THE VIDEO AND FACEBOOKED ABOUT IT. We got at least 10 more views because of it! A great day for all (it’s up there with the day Red Funnel Ferries followed me on Twitter).

isle-of-wight-map

The other day, my sister and I signed up to do a 100k charity bike ride around the (definitely not flat) Isle of Wight. Sure, we were drunk when we said yes, and sure, we didn’t really consider the fact that we hadn’t been on a bike in about 5 or 6 years, but we knew we had one thing on up on the young cyclists of today; one thing that would surely get us through:

Yep, we both PASSED OUR CYCLING PROFICIENCY FIRST TIME.

We also knew that we had a grand total 3 months to prepare for the bike ride. Could we do it? Well, seeing as we left it until the weekend before to get actually on a bike, it was unlikely. Here is the story of what happened when we finally attempted to train.

las-vegas-friends-on-a-trip

Earlier this year, I went on the holiday of a lifetime to Las Vegas with 5 of my best mates, and I can officially confirm that everything you’ve heard about it is true.

I spent all my money gambling and didn’t win a cent; I stayed in a casino all night and only realised when I emerged into broad daylight the next morning;  I saw a just-married couple wearing jeans and t-shirts and discovered they’d only met three hours earlier, and I ate more carbs than I had done in an enitre year. For breakfast.

But there’s also quite a lot they don’t tell you about this little Sin City in the middle of the Nevada desert; suprising secrets that have remained that way… until now.

Hold on to your proverbial cowboy hats and get ready for some truths, tips and truly American tales: it’s the Top 10 Things They Don’t Tell You About Vegas.
